Two research consortia in the Quantum Technologies for Fundamental Physics programme have joined forces to develop an engagement programme showcasing high precision measurements using light. To inspire future enthusiasts of this technology, which sits at the intersection of classical and quantum physics, we created Photon Bricks – a laser interferometer made entirely from LEGO.
This custom-made educational kit builds on the My Photonics project, developed at Osnabrück University in Germany. We’ve improved original designs and created entirely new builds too. Most of the LEGO pieces come together to form an optical breadboard – a sturdy foundation for holding adjustable optical components. Our designs are inspired by real scientific equipment used in optics laboratories around the world.
Our kits come as open-source hardware – you are welcome to download resource materials or even join the kit loan scheme.
